There is no pet-shipping industry available to a private owner moving a home aquarium, so it is a job you do yourself. The critical item is the filter media, kept wet in tank water, because it holds the bacteria colony that keeps the tank alive. Stop feeding 24 to 48 hours before, bag with oxygen, and move the tank completely empty.
Fish are the one companion animal where the honest answer to how do I hire someone to move them is that you largely cannot. There is a substantial industry shipping fish between breeders, wholesalers and shops, and almost none of it is available to a private owner moving a home aquarium. What you are really moving is not the fish alone but an established biological system, and understanding that changes both the method and, for some owners, the decision about whether to move them at all.
Why nobody will ship your aquarium
The commercial fish trade works because it moves young, robust, commercially valuable stock in standardised bags, in volume, on known routes, with an accepted loss rate. None of that describes a household tank containing six adult fish an owner is attached to. Pet transport operators who carry dogs and cats do not have the equipment or the experience, and the specialist fish shippers work business to business.
So in practice a home aquarium move is a job you do yourself, and the good news is that it is entirely achievable over short and medium distances. Over long distances, and particularly for a marine or reef setup, the calculation is harder and it is worth being honest about it early rather than discovering the difficulty on moving day.
Before anything else, check legality. Most aquarium species are unremarkable, but a number of fish are listed as injurious wildlife under 50 CFR part 16, and several states restrict particular species on invasive grounds, a problem the US Fish and Wildlife aquatic invasive species programme exists to manage. Under the Lacey Act, moving a fish held in breach of state law across a state line turns a state issue into a federal one. If you keep anything unusual, confirm with the destination state's wildlife agency first.

The thing you are actually moving is the filter
This is the point that separates a successful aquarium move from a disaster, and it is not obvious. An established tank is a working colony of nitrifying bacteria living in the filter media and, to a lesser extent, the substrate. Those bacteria convert the ammonia fish excrete into progressively less toxic compounds. Remove them and the tank is effectively brand new, which means an ammonia spike, which means dead fish a week after a move that appeared to go perfectly.
The bacteria die quickly if the media dries out or goes without oxygen. So the single most important thing you carry is the filter media, kept wet in tank water, in a container with air space, and kept out of extremes of temperature. Do not rinse it, do not let it sit dry in a box, and do not put it in a sealed bag for two days. If you preserve nothing else from the old tank, preserve that.
Carry as much of the original tank water as is practical for the same reason, though water matters less than media. Plan to test ammonia and nitrite daily for the first fortnight after the move and to feed sparingly during that period, because uneaten food is a direct ammonia source at exactly the moment the system is least able to cope.
Planning the timeline backwards
An aquarium move is unusual among pet moves in that most of the work happens in the fortnight beforehand and the fortnight afterwards, with the journey itself being the short and simple part. Working backwards from the moving date is the way to get it right.
Two weeks out, stop adding anything new to the tank and get the system as stable as you can. Buy the bags, the insulated boxes and a fresh test kit now rather than later. If you can borrow or buy a battery powered air pump, do, because it covers you if the journey runs long or you are held up overnight. Three or four days out, do a water change so the fish start from good water, and confirm exactly where the tank will go in the new home, including whether the floor will take the weight of a large tank and whether there is a socket within reach.
The day before, stop feeding. On the day, work in the order set out below and try to make the fish the last thing out and the last thing in. Afterwards, expect a fortnight of watching the water rather than the fish, and resist the urge to do a large water change at the first sign of a reading, which can slow the re-establishment down rather than help it.
Bagging, oxygen and how long fish can travel
Fish travel in bags, not in a bucket sloshing in a footwell. A bag is filled roughly a third with tank water and two thirds with air, or with pure oxygen for longer journeys, and is doubled because bags leak and fins puncture them. One fish per bag for anything territorial or spiny. The bags then go into an insulated box, upright and packed so they cannot roll, which both stabilises temperature and keeps the fish in darkness, which calms them considerably.
Stop feeding for twenty four to forty eight hours before the move. This is not cruelty and it is the standard practice in the trade: a fasted fish produces far less waste in the bag, and ammonia accumulating in a small volume of water is the main thing that kills fish in transit. A healthy adult fish is entirely unbothered by two days without food.
Properly bagged with oxygen and kept cool and dark, most freshwater fish travel comfortably for a day and can manage longer. The practical limit for a home move is usually the owner's stamina rather than the fish's tolerance. Marine fish and invertebrates are less forgiving, and corals are a different exercise again.

Acclimation on arrival matters as much as the journey. Water in a bag drifts in temperature and chemistry over hours, and tipping fish straight into a differently conditioned tank causes shock that can kill days later. Float the sealed bags to equalise temperature, then introduce new water gradually rather than all at once, and do not pour the transport water into the tank, since it is by then high in waste and low in oxygen.
Plants, invertebrates and the rest of the tank
Live plants are more forgiving than fish and are usually moved wrapped in wet newspaper or kitchen towel inside a sealed bag, kept cool and out of direct light. They tolerate a day or two like that without difficulty. What they do not tolerate is being left in a hot car, and a bag of plants cooking on a back seat will arrive as mush. If the move is long, plants are the one component it is genuinely reasonable to abandon and replace, since they are cheap and replacing them costs nothing but time.
Freshwater shrimp and snails are considerably more sensitive than fish to changes in water chemistry and to ammonia, so they need their own bags with more water relative to the number of animals, and they need slower acclimation at the other end. Shrimp in particular are notorious for surviving the journey and then dying during a rushed introduction. If you keep an established shrimp colony, accept that losses are likely and move as many as you reasonably can rather than trying to catch every individual out of the substrate.
Equipment travels easily but should be drained and dried, with one exception. Filters, as covered above, must not dry out. Heaters should be allowed to cool fully before removal, because a hot glass heater lifted into cold air can crack. Keep lids, brackets and the small parts that are impossible to replace in a labelled box with the tank rather than distributed through the general packing, because a tank with no lid clips is not a working tank.
The tank itself, and the order of operations
A glass aquarium must travel completely empty. Even a few inches of water left in a tank creates enormous shifting stress on the seams as the vehicle moves, and a tank that arrives with a failed silicone joint is a total loss. Substrate should come out too for anything but the smallest tank, both for weight and because it grinds against the base.
The order that works is: catch and bag the fish last, after the tank is otherwise ready to strip, so they spend the minimum time bagged. Then remove plants and decor, bag the filter media wet, save as much water as you can carry, drain the rest, remove the substrate, and move the empty tank. At the other end reverse it, and get the tank running with heater and filter before the fish go anywhere near it.

Ponds deserve a separate mention, because the same principles apply at a scale that changes the answer. Moving established koi or pond goldfish is a considerable undertaking involving large volumes, and the fish themselves can be big enough that bagging is impractical without proper equipment. Owners in that position generally either sell the fish with the house, which is common and entirely normal, or bring in a specialist koi dealer who has the transport tanks and oxygen kit to do it properly. It is not a job to improvise with dustbins.
Cold water and tropical setups also differ in one practical respect worth noting. A tropical tank has less margin on temperature and needs its heater running the moment it is refilled, whereas a coldwater tank is more tolerant of a slow setup. If you are moving in winter with a tropical system, the insulated box matters more and the gap between arrival and a working heater matters more still.
When rehoming is the kinder answer
This deserves saying plainly, because most pages on this subject will not say it. For a cross country move, for a large tank, or for a marine or reef system, moving the livestock is genuinely difficult and the honest risk of losses is real. A reef tank in particular depends on stability that a multi day move simply cannot provide, and corals that have been established for years often do not survive the disruption.
Rehoming fish to a local aquarium society, a specialist shop or another hobbyist, and starting again at the destination, is a legitimate and often better outcome than a heroic attempt that ends badly. It is not a failure of care. Local fishkeeping clubs are usually glad to help and will frequently collect, and many shops will take healthy stock.
If you do decide to move them, decide early, because the preparation is time sensitive and the boxes, bags and oxygen are not things you can obtain the night before. And whichever way you go, never release a fish into local water.
