Colorado-specific paperwork and rules

Local pet taxi rides inside Colorado require no special paperwork. Moving a pet into Colorado from another state does, and the detail that catches people out is the form itself. Colorado does not accept VS Form 7001 as a certificate of veterinary inspection for interstate travel into the state, which matters because 7001 is the federal APHIS form many clinics reach for by default. Ask your vet to confirm they are issuing an accepted CVI before you travel.

For dogs and cats entering Colorado, the Colorado Department of Agriculture requires a certificate of veterinary inspection issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry, and proof of current rabies vaccination for any animal over three months old. The rabies vaccination date, the vaccine manufacturer and the serial number all have to be listed on the CVI itself, so there is no need for a separate standalone rabies document, but the clinic does need the vaccination record in front of them when they complete it.

Two exceptions are worth knowing. If the pet is going into a facility licensed under Colorado's Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act, such as a boarding kennel or daycare, the window tightens to a CVI issued within 10 days of entry rather than 30. And Colorado adopted an emergency New World Screwworm rule on 10 June 2026 that requires a CVI within 5 days of entry for dogs and cats arriving from states with an active screwworm infested zone. That rule follows USDA APHIS designations, currently covering parts of Texas and New Mexico, so it does not apply to most routes. Designations move, so check the state page in the week you travel rather than relying on any list as permanent.

For air transport out of Denver International (DEN) or Colorado Springs (COS), the airline sets its own terms on top of the state rules. Most carriers want a health certificate issued within 10 days of the flight and an IATA-compliant crate, and many run breed and temperature embargoes in summer.
