ROUTE · PET TRANSPORT COST

Pet transport averages $1,200 to $2,500 in the US — here’s why.

Every cost guide we publish uses real operator quotes pulled in the last 90 days. No marketing fluff, no anchor pricing, no inflated estimates designed to sell upsells.

LOCAL TAXI

$40 – $120

CROSS COUNTRY

$1,000 – $2,500

FLIGHT NANNY

$500 – $1,500

PRIVATE JET

$8,000 – $25k+

Pet transport pricing is one of the most opaque corners of the pet industry. Operators rarely publish full price lists. Quotes vary by 5× for what looks like the same trip. And most “best pet transport companies” articles online recommend whoever pays the highest affiliate commission.

This pillar is our attempt to fix that. Every article in this section is built on real quotes — pulled from operator websites, request forms, and direct phone calls in the last 90 days — with the date stamped clearly so you can judge how current the data is.

What pet transport actually costs in 2026

Local pet taxi (vet runs, grooming, daycare drops within 25 miles): $40–$120 round trip. Cross-country ground transport (private vehicle, door-to-door, 1,000–3,000 miles): $1,000–$2,500. Flight nanny (small dog flying in cabin with a paid escort): $500–$1,500. Private jet pet charter: $8,000–$25,000+. International air shipping: $2,000–$8,000.

Within each band, prices flex with route, season, breed, weight, urgency, and add-on services (door-to-door, layover stops, vet checks at the midpoint).

Why prices vary so much

  • Service tier. Shared cargo runs from $0.50–$1.00 per mile. Private door-to-door runs $1.00–$3.00 per mile. Same route, same breed — 3× spread.
  • Urgency. Standard scheduling (2+ weeks out) is baseline. Expedited (3–7 days) adds 25%. Emergency (24–48 hours) adds 60% or more.
  • Animal type. Cats price similarly to small dogs. Snub-nosed breeds (bulldogs, pugs) often face air-cargo bans and have to ground-ship — pushing them into the higher pricing tier by default.
  • Documentation included. A flat-rate cross-country quote that doesn’t include CVI handling will hit you with $200–$400 of vet visits and paperwork on top.
