How the calculator works

The formula behind this tool is built from real quotes we've collected reviewing 17 US pet transport operators over the past year. Base rates and per-mile rates are the median we've seen, then adjusted for the modifiers (pet count, urgency, add-ons) operators typically apply.

Base pricing model (May 2026)

ServiceBase feePer mileService-specific extras
Local pet taxi$40$1.50Ceiling around $120 round trip
Ground transport (shared van)$300$0.85Includes overnight in van
Flight nanny (in-cabin)$400$0.30+$250 average airline ticket
Air cargo$600$0.40+$300 IATA crate fee
Private jet charter$8,000$4.00+$2,500 handling

Modifiers we apply

  • Each additional pet: +35% of the base fee. Two dogs on the same trip rarely cost double, but they cost meaningfully more than one.
  • Expedited (3-7 days lead time): +25%. Operators have to reshuffle routes.
  • Emergency (under 72 hours): +60%. Often requires private rather than shared transport.
  • Add-ons: stacked at face value (door-to-door $150, climate-controlled overnight $300, vet escort $500, GPS + photo updates $200, senior dog protocol $250).
  • Range output: we show a typical range of -15% to +20% around the point estimate. This is the spread we typically see across operators for the same trip.

When the estimate will be wrong

This calculator gets you within roughly 20% of a real quote for the most common scenarios. There are five situations where it will be meaningfully off, and you should treat it as a floor not a ceiling:

  1. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds. Most airlines refuse them in cargo. Ground becomes mandatory and the route may be more expensive.
  2. International moves. USDA endorsements, quarantine, country-specific paperwork can add $500 to $3,000 not modeled here.
  3. Senior dogs with complex medical needs. Vet escort, medication management, and private rather than shared routes typically push the real cost 30 to 50% above the estimate.
  4. Multi-pet groups over 3. Operators often require a private van booking which has a higher minimum than the per-pet math suggests.
  5. Holiday weeks or major travel surges. July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and major college move-in weeks all see 15-30% premiums.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this calculator?
The output is typically within 20% of the real quote you'll get for a standard trip. For brachycephalic breeds, senior dogs with medical needs, multi-pet groups over 3, international moves, and holiday weeks, the real number can be 30-50% higher than the estimate. Treat the output as a budgeting floor, not a ceiling.
Why is air cargo cheaper than ground in some scenarios?
For long-distance moves with a healthy small dog, air can come out cheaper on the headline number. But air requires an IATA crate ($150-$400), USDA health certificate ($85-$200), and airline pet fee ($200-$1,000) that the base price does not include. Add those and most cross-country routes are within $500 either way.
Why are flight nanny estimates so much higher than air cargo?
A flight nanny is a person who flies in-cabin with your pet, which means an airline ticket for them plus their fee. It's the safest air option but adds roughly $1,000-$2,500 over straight cargo.
Does the urgency premium really run 60% above standard?
For genuine emergency moves (under 72 hours), yes. Operators have to reshuffle scheduled routes, often switch from shared to private, and absorb a higher chance of last-minute cancellations. If your timeline is flexible by even a week, you'll save 25-40%.
How are local pet taxi rates different from ground transport?
Local pet taxi runs under 50 miles, often within a single metro. Rates are time-based ($40 base + $1.50/mile, capped around $120 for round trips). Ground transport is the cross-state or cross-country van option with a different cost structure.
What if I want a private jet quote?
The estimate gets you in the ballpark, but private jet pricing has wide swings based on aircraft type and route. For an actual quote, the operators that handle pet-friendly charter (Set Jet, Bark Air, K9 Jets) all quote on demand.
Why does adding pets only add 35% per extra pet?
Most of the operator cost is fixed (driver time, vehicle, fuel, lodging). Adding a second pet adds incremental crate space and food, not a second of everything. Some operators do bill per-pet linearly; the 35% modifier reflects the median behavior we've seen across our reviewed operators.
Does this calculator save my data?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. We don't store any inputs or estimates. The GA4 event we fire records only the estimate number for our own analytics, not any identifying information.
