Great Wolf Lodge Pet Policy

Great Wolf Lodge does not allow pets. Every lodge FAQ we checked gives the same answer: for the health and comfort of all guests, no pets are allowed in the lodge. The only exception is service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which can go into all areas of the resort except the pools and attractions of the indoor water park. Kalahari Resorts, the other big indoor water park chain, has the same rule and says outright that emotional support animals count as pets and are not allowed either. If you are planning a water park trip, your dog will need to stay at a kennel or with a sitter.

This guide is built from the chains' own pages, read in October 2026: the FAQ pages of the 23 Great Wolf Lodge locations listed on its website, including the Wisconsin Dells FAQ and the Niagara Falls FAQ, and the Kalahari Resorts FAQ for each of its four US resorts. Rules can change, so check the FAQ for your lodge before you travel.

Is Great Wolf Lodge pet friendly?

No. The question "Are pets allowed?" appears in the FAQ of 22 of the 23 lodge pages we checked, and the answer is the same at all of them: "For the health and comfort of all of our guests, we do not allow any pets into the lodge." That covers lodges across the US and the one in Canada, from Wisconsin Dells, Sandusky and the Poconos to Grapevine, Kansas City, Colorado Springs, Southern California, Northern California, Georgia, Naples and Niagara Falls. Niagara puts it even more plainly, calling itself a pet free resort. There are no pet-friendly room types and no pet fee, because pets are simply not accepted.

The reason is the format. Great Wolf Lodges are family resorts built around an indoor water park, with crowds of children, shared corridors, food courts and a busy lobby. Allergies, noise and safety are all bigger concerns there than at an ordinary hotel, and the chain has decided not to accept pets at all.

Service animals at Great Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf Lodge allows service animals as defined by the ADA in all areas of the resort, with one exception: for health and safety, service animals are not allowed in the pools and attractions of the water park. Sandusky words it slightly differently, saying service animals are permitted in certain areas, not including pools or water park attractions. The pools rule is in line with the Department of Justice guidance, which lets businesses keep service animals out of swimming pools while allowing them on the deck.

Under the ADA service animal rules, a service animal is a dog individually trained to perform a task for a person with a disability. Staff may ask only two questions: whether the dog is required because of a disability, and what work or task it has been trained to perform. They cannot ask for paperwork, a vest or a demonstration, and they cannot charge a pet fee. If a service dog is out of control or not house-trained, the lodge can ask for it to be removed. Our guide to service dog hotel rights goes through these rules in more detail.

Plan ahead if you rely on a service dog and want to use the water park. The dog cannot go into the pools or onto the slides, so someone in your group will need to stay with it, or the handler will need a plan for the time spent in the water.

What about emotional support animals?

An emotional support animal is not a service animal under the ADA, because it provides comfort rather than performing a trained task. Hotels are not required to accept ESAs. Great Wolf's FAQ only makes an exception for ADA service animals, so an ESA is treated like any other pet and is not allowed. Kalahari is explicit, saying pets, including ESAs, are not permitted. A letter from a therapist will not change this at either chain. Our guide to service dogs, emotional support animals and therapy dogs explains why the law treats them differently.

What happens if you bring a pet anyway?

Do not try to sneak a dog into a water park resort. Several Great Wolf lodge FAQs note that cleaning fees may be added for damage to the room, and staff walk the corridors constantly. Kalahari's FAQ is blunt: guests who bring animals against the pet policy will be asked to leave and will not be refunded. On a family trip that could mean losing a multi-night booking that cost well over USD 1,000, and finding a pet-friendly hotel at short notice in a busy resort town.

Kennels near Great Wolf Lodge

Many lodges help you find somewhere for your dog. The FAQs for Wisconsin Dells, Concord, Grand Mound, Colorado Springs, Mason, Grapevine, Kansas City and Traverse City include links to a full service kennel near the lodge, and Wisconsin Dells names Pampered Paws Pet Retreat among its suggestions. Others give a phone number instead: Williamsburg lists 757.564.3469, the New England lodge in Fitchburg lists 866.678.9653, and Niagara Falls asks guests to call the lodge at 905.354.4888 for kennel information. The other lodges do not list a kennel, so search for one near your lodge well before the trip.

Book early for school holidays and summer weekends, which are the busiest times at both the lodges and the kennels nearby. Most boarding kennels want proof of rabies, distemper and Bordetella vaccines, sometimes given at least a week before the stay. Our guide to what vaccines a dog needs for boarding explains the usual requirements and timing.

How to vet a kennel you have never used

Choosing a kennel in a town you are only visiting is harder than choosing one at home, because you cannot drop in for a tour first. Call and ask how many dogs they take, how often dogs go outside, who is on site overnight, which vet they use in an emergency, and whether you can see the kennel area at drop-off. Read recent reviews, not just the star rating, and look for mentions of how staff handled a problem. Our checklist of dog boarding red flags covers the warning signs to watch for when you arrive. If your dog has never boarded before, a short trial day at a kennel near home in the weeks before the trip helps it get used to the idea.

Other options for your dog during a water park trip

If boarding near the lodge does not appeal, you have three other routes:

  • Leave the dog at home with a sitter. For a two or three night trip, a pet sitter who stays in your home or visits several times a day is often the least stressful option. Our comparison of dog boarding and pet sitting sets out the pros and cons.
  • Board at home before you leave. A kennel you already know avoids the uncertainty of a new place, and you can collect the dog on the way back.
  • Stay nearby with the dog. Book a pet-friendly hotel close to the lodge and buy a water park day pass, where the lodge sells them, so the dog stays with you at night. Day passes are not offered at every lodge or on every date, so check with the lodge first.

Pet-friendly hotels near Great Wolf Lodge

Most Great Wolf Lodges sit in tourist areas with plenty of chain hotels nearby. If you want your dog with you at night, look at chains whose pet rules are easy to check. Motel 6 lets two pets stay free, Red Roof lets the first pet stay free, and La Quinta charges a modest nightly fee with a cap, as our guides to the Motel 6 pet policy and other chains explain. Our list of hotels with no pet fee is a good place to start, and our guide to finding pet-friendly hotels covers how to check a specific property.

What to send your kennel or sitter

Whether your dog boards near the lodge or stays home with a sitter, a short written brief avoids most problems. Include:

  • Your phone number and a backup contact who can make decisions if you are in the water and cannot answer.
  • Your vet's name and number, plus the vaccine record.
  • Feeding amounts and times, and any foods to avoid.
  • Medication, dose times and how the dog takes it.
  • Habits worth knowing, such as escaping, pulling or fear of storms.

If you choose a sitter, meet them with your dog before the trip and walk them through the house, the feeding routine and the dog's favorite walk.

Kalahari Resorts pet policy

Kalahari runs four large indoor water park resorts in the US: Wisconsin Dells, Sandusky in Ohio, the Poconos in Pennsylvania and Round Rock in Texas. The FAQ for each one says that, with the exception of service animals under the ADA, pets, including ESAs, are not permitted at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions, and that guests bringing animals against the policy will be asked to leave without a refund.

One detail in Kalahari's wording is worth knowing. The FAQ refers to service animals "certified" under the ADA, but the ADA has no certification or registration for service animals, and the Department of Justice says businesses cannot require proof of certification. A trained service dog is covered whether or not it has any certificate, and staff can only ask the same two questions as at any other business.

A worked example: a weekend at Great Wolf Lodge Wisconsin Dells

Say you are driving to Wisconsin Dells for two nights with your children and a 50 pound Labrador. The lodge will not take the dog, so you have three choices. You can book one of the kennels the Dells lodge links to, drop the dog off on the way in, and collect it on the way home, which means getting the dog's vaccine records to the kennel in advance. You can leave the dog at home with a sitter. Or you can stay at a pet-friendly hotel in the Dells and visit the water park on a day pass if one is available on your dates. For most families on a short trip, a sitter at home or a kennel the lodge recommends is the simplest choice.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an ESA letter will get a dog into the lodge. It will not, at Great Wolf or Kalahari.
  • Expecting a service dog to join you in the pools. It must stay out of the water park attractions.
  • Leaving kennel booking until the week of the trip, during school holidays.
  • Leaving a dog in the car in the parking lot while the family swims.
  • Trying to hide a pet in the room, which can end the stay with no refund.

Tips for planning around the no-pet rule

  • Book your dog's care at the same time as your lodge reservation.
  • Send the kennel or sitter the vaccine records, feeding notes and your vet's number in advance.
  • Pack a familiar blanket and the dog's own food for the kennel.
  • Follow the ASPCA's travel safety tips if the dog is traveling with you to a nearby hotel.

The bottom line

Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari are not pet-friendly. Both allow ADA service animals, both keep them out of the water park pools and attractions, and Kalahari says ESAs are not allowed. Plan for a kennel near the lodge, a sitter at home or a pet-friendly hotel nearby, and book that care as early as the room.
